SLAEB Holds Discussion on Introducing Nuclear Research Reactor Technology for Sri Lanka’s Research Sector
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) held a discussion on 5th August 2026 to explore avenues for introduction of Nuclear Research Reactor technology to strengthen Sri Lanka’s nuclear science research sector. The meeting was conducted under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Regional Technical Cooperation Project RAS/1033 titled “Strengthening Regional Capabilities and Infrastructure to Support Research Reactor Safe Operation, Utilization and Scientific Research for Prosperous Development.”
The discussion brought together academics and researchers from SLAEB, the University of Colombo, and the University of Moratuwa to examine the potential applications of Nuclear Research Reactor technology in scientific research, innovation, education, and industrial development. Participants also discussed opportunities for higher education, specialized training, and collaborative research through partnerships with research reactor centers across the Asia-Pacific region.
The meeting further explored the long-term feasibility of establishing a Research Reactor facility in Sri Lanka to support the country’s Nuclear Power Study and Planning Program. Such a facility would strengthen national research infrastructure, enhance technical expertise, and support the development of skilled human resources.
The discussion was attended by Senior Professor Upul Sonnadara (Department of Physics, University of Colombo), Professor Anura Wijepala (University of Moratuwa), Dr. Muditha Bandara Rathnayaka (Department of Nuclear Science, University of Colombo) , and scientists and researchers from SLAEB including Mr. Poshitha Dabare as national project coordinator for RAS/1033, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in Sri Lanka.
