IAEA – RCA Regional Training Course on Isotope – based Mass Modelling and Estimation of Efficacy of Artificial Recharge Measures
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) is hosting an international training course on “Isotope-Based Mass Modelling and Estimation of the Efficacy of Artificial Recharge Measures” from 20th to 24th July 2026 at the Ramada Colombo.
The five-day training course is attended by 21 international participants from 11 Asian countries, including Bangladesh, China, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Representatives from key national stakeholder institutions, including the Water Resources Board (WRB) and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), are also participating in the programme.
The course is being conducted under the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Regional Project RAS7043. It focuses on the application of environmental isotope techniques and advanced mass-balance modelling to assess, monitor, and manage groundwater recharge, there by contributing to sustainable water resource management in water-scarce regions.
As part of the programme, participants will undertake a technical tour to the managed aquifer recharge area in Rajanganaya, providing an opportunity to observe the practical application of scientific techniques for groundwater management.
Through this international training programme and its continued collaboration with the IAEA and national stakeholders, SLAEB is further strengthening the peaceful and practical applications of nuclear science and technology to address critical challenges related to water scarcity, climate change, and sustainable development in Sri Lanka and the wider Asian region.
